Phoenix (April 26, 2002) - I am today announcing that I am a candidate for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives, District 2 of Arizona.
Congressman Bob Stump's dedication to the people of Arizona has been an inspiration to me. I have learned a great deal from him in 26 years, and it has been my honor to work for him and with him throughout every community in this District. I value and appreciate his friendship, his trust, and his endorsement of my candidacy.
The Second District, which stretches from the urban areas of Western Maricopa County, to the Colorado River Communities, the Hopi Reservation, and the Arizona Strip, represents the best of Arizona's rich cultural and natural resource history and the great potential of our State's future. I know the District, and the goals, values and opinions of its residents. Today, I am setting out to earn their trust and win their votes to represent them in Congress.
I believe that my familiarity and understanding of the issues facing the District, together with my experience in helping to resolve them, has prepared me
to find the right balance between the needs of an urban constituency, with those of rural Arizona.
In the coming weeks, our campaign will focus on the people, the issues, and the communities of the Second Congressional District. I pledge to honor the promises made to our senior citizens and veterans. I will support the military and the President in our resolve to defend America against terrorism. I will work to protect the free market and the free enterprise system. And, I pledge never to abandon Bob Stump's principles of better government, not bigger government, and of individual liberty over governmental control.
